নবরাত্রি — তাৎপর্য
দুর্গা পূজা — বাঙালির শ্রেষ্ঠ উৎসব, নবরাত্রির বাঙালি রূপ। আশ্বিন শুক্ল প্রতিপদ থেকে নবমী পর্যন্ত দুর্গার নয় রূপ ক্রমান্বয়ে পূজিত। মহালয়ার মাধ্যমে দেবীপক্ষের সূচনা; ষষ্ঠী থেকে দশমী পর্যন্ত পাঁচ দিনের মূল পূজা। মহাষ্টমীর কুমারী পূজা ও সন্ধি পূজা; মহানবমীর হোম; বিজয়া দশমীর বিসর্জন এবং কোলাকুলি। কলকাতার বারোয়ারি পূজা, প্যান্ডেল ও থিম শিল্প বিশ্ববিখ্যাত।

According to the Markandeya Purana, Goddess Durga fought the buffalo demon Mahishasura for nine days and nights and slew him on the tenth (Vijayadashami). Each day is associated with a form of the goddess (Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri, Siddhidatri).
