According to tradition, the Makar Vilakku is a divine light that appears at the Ponnambalamedu hill opposite the Sabarimala temple on Makar Sankranti. It is considered a blessing from the gods. Lord Ayyappan is the deity of the shrine—the son of Shiva and Mohini (Vishnu).

- Observe 41 days of austerity (vrata) before the pilgrimage—no non-veg, alcohol, or certain habits.
- Trek to Sabarimala (or the nearest Ayyappan temple); wear black or blue dress and carry irumudi.
